What wedge is best to play the ‘burning wedge’
shot around the green? In this pitching tips, we’ll have a look at what is available, and determine which pitching wedge is best to use. Today’s standard pitching wedge has about 48′ degrees of loft, and sometimes as little as 44′ degrees. Sand wedges, meanwhile, still have about 56′ degrees of loft, which leaves a fair amount of gap difference between them. When you consider that for each degree of difference, at 3 meters distance per degree, this adds up to a huge 24 meter gap. A massive hole, right in the middle of your scoring irons.
Not only that, but the pitching wedge now hits the ball as low and with as little spin as an old 9 iron. So, why not add a gap wedge to your arsenal. Gap wedges vary in degree from 50′ to 54′ degrees of loft, they fill the gap and can hit a variety of shots near the green.
I am going to show you how to hit the ‘burning wedge’, the shot that flies low and checks up fast on the second or third bounce, a shot you see most pros perform with ease in certain situations around the green.
The ‘burning wedge’ is usually hit from between 40 to 100 meters out from the green. It flies low, then skids 2 or 3 times and then checks up. It’s a great shot to play to a back pin position, and the gap wedge is perfect to place lots of spin on this shot.
Ok, to hit the ‘burning wedge’, firstly you should :-
#Grip down on the golf club
Normally you would grip the club about 1 inch down the shaft, instead, grip it lower down, about 2-3 inches from the top of the shaft.
#Stand closer to the golf ball
Gripping down further on the shaft, will bring your stance closer to the ball.
#Play the ball further back in your stance
Place the golf ball further back from center in the stance, towards your right foot, approximately in line with the inside of your foot.
#Take the club back up steeply on the backswing
Instead of your normal sweeping backswing, raise the club up quickly and more steeply, to deliver a more of a dropping downswing into the back of the golf ball.
#Hold the club firm with your left hand
Holding the club a little firmer in your left hand will help to maintain a rigid, flat, left wrist and reduce wrist cupping.
#Hit down aggressively through the ball, while you maintain the bend in your left wrist.
The lower trajectory and high spin of the burning wedge, aids in your distance control.
Try this technique out when your on the range practicing, it won’t take you long to master the burning wedge shot.
