Driving Accuracy Before Long DistanceMost amateur golfers have one thing in mind, and that is to hit the golf ball as far as possible off the tee with their driver. Many never quite overcome this mental mindset and this is one of the reasons why they won’t get the desired distance from the tee that they are capable of hitting.

A seasoned golfer will practice for ‘accuracy’ off the tee first, then concentrate on gaining the distance once they have mastered the art of control.

I happened to watch the women’s Australian open this year and saw Yani Tseng from Taipee, the 2010 LPGA player of the year and winner of two majors in that year and current world number 5, win the 2011 Women’s Australian Open for the second time, back to back by 7 strokes from her nearest rival, who happens to be the current world number one, Jiyai Shin from Korea.

As I watched I asked myself, ‘What is it that sets these women in particular, apart from the rest on the LPGA tour, why do they dominate so many of the world’s tournaments, many of them are just over 5 feet tall, Jiyai Shin the world number one from Korea, is only 5ft 1 inch tall, yet their domination of women’s golf worldwide is unmatched.

Golfers are constantly looking for golf driving tips from anyone that has them. If you’re in line at the supermarket and run into your neighbor who is a 5 handicap, you know golf is bound to come up. Most golfers I know want, at a minimum to get off the tee to at least get them in the game and enjoy their round. Golf instruction driving is a necessary step in the development
of a full golf game. Since most players will learn on short or middle irons, golf instruction driving might create problems initially. The driver swing is much different than that of an iron in general terms. There is a principle of striking the ball with irons that encourages the player to hit the ball on the downswing.

Golf instructions for driving differs greatly in that the aim of the swing is to catch the ball while the club is sweeping through the hitting zone on the up. Since drivers are less lofted than irons,this driving instruction will emphasize using that loft as a complement to the upstroke of the swing to maximize distance.

Drivers are less accurate than irons and thus require a great deal
of consistency in the swing. Golf driving, should focus on not overswinging. An accurate driver can take strokes off of a round, but being inaccurate and long will usually just result in lost balls.
